Follow on Google News | Shiloh to authors: readers deserve that we should read our own audio booksThe author and narrator of the upcoming audio book “Pookoo” says authors should read aloud their own audio books. If so, writers and readers alike can get a 'win-win.'
“I think readers ought to demand it,” Doug Shiloh said, who also runs the Northern Illinois writers' reading group called The Literary Road Show. “We certainly owe it to readers. If you have James Franco or Robert Downey, Jr. reading your book, great – who wouldn't like that? If an author is deceased, I get it. Some books are enhanced by great narration by voiceover artists or famous actors. Don't let it stop. I am just saying that an alternative product should be a must from an author.” On October 1st, 2013, Shiloh pre-released a chapter of his forthcoming novel “Pookoo” with a selection titled “The 6-Foot Lobster.” It's released worldwide on Amazon, iTunes and at CDBaby, among others. Technology now allows for more authors to go into a recording studio. He daydreams of what-ifs such as hearing Shakespeare or Dickens reading aloud one of their works, knowing the impossibility. But he moans at the fact of today's big names not going before the microphone. “For instance, James Patterson doesn't narrate his own stories,” Shiloh explained. “I found sitting in the studio that I really want to make sure my books are available in audiobook. To read it aloud helps the editing process. And when I was in high school, I connected with hearing the voices of actual recordings by authors such as T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway. The biggest benefit is for the fans. Only do we, the writer, know inflections and the true voice. “I'm mystified that the great actor Sean Penn is reading Bob Dylan's “Chronicles” Shiloh spent 4 sessions this past summer, in August and September, at Underground Squirrel Studio in Rockford, Illinois recording POOKOO A Satire of Celebrity. The project came out to a final 10 hours of recording, which will be released later in 2013. Micky Rosenquist was engineer.
