Energy Intelligence announces EI New Energy's Top 100 Green Utilities Ranking

Oct. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Energy Intelligence’s EI New Energy publication has published its second annual Top 100 Green Utilities Ranking — a unique ranking of the world's leading electric utilities based on their renewable energy portfolios and greenhouse gas emissions.

Spain's Iberdrola and Portugal's EDP again take the top two positions, with four other European companies —Dong Energy, EDF, Enel and E.On — also making the top 10 this year.

In other key conclusions, the report shows:

*US companies were propelled higher in the rankings by shale gas, as substitution for coal-fired power cut their carbon emissions by an average 9%

*Chinese utilities made substantial investments in renewable power, with two — China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) and China Guodian — making the ranking’s top 10. CGN boasts a unique combination of all three forms of carbon-free generation: renewables, hydro and nuclear
 Japanese utilities are slipping in the rankings as the post-Fukushima closure of nuclear plants forces far greater use of fossil fuels

*Companies in the Middle East continue to fare poorly, as low oil and gas prices deter investment in renewable power or even efficient fossil fuel technology

EI New Energy, a specialist publication on renewable energy and carbon, selected 100 of the largest power generators from around the world, accounting for just over half of global capacity, and evaluated their “greenness” according to carbon dioxide emissions per megawatt hour, volume of renewable energy capacity and proportion of renewables to total capacity.

Rather than approach the subject by country or region, the report compares utilities around the world, from both industrialized and emerging markets. An accompanying analysis draws out key trends and conclusions.

"By tracking utilities rather than countries, this groundbreaking survey provides a bottom-up guide to progress toward a lower-carbon future," says EI New Energy Editor David Pike. “Despite the confused state of climate policy, steady progress is being made at this level.”
