Launched by Scranton earlier this year, S.A.F.E. is a Not-For-Profit organization dedicated to providing basic financial education as a public service. It is made up of a national network of financial professionals who volunteer their time as financial educators. S.A.F.E. programs are available for free to communities, businesses and organizations, and range from guest speaking to workshops, adult education classes and employee training. Because some groups and organizations may be interested in S.A.F.E. programs but lack facilities to host them, Scranton decided to dedicate a space locally for precisely that purpose. It also gives the nationwide program a symbolic home base, Scranton said. The simple classroom setting is sufficient to accommodate presentations of varying size and scope, with plenty of room for comfortable seating and amenities for audiovisual aids. “Most people who know me know how I feel about education in general and financial education in particular,” Scranton explained to guests at the grand opening that the mission of S.A.F.E. is to try to compensate for the fact that average consumers have little or no access to affordable education when it comes to even basic financial topics such as saving and investing, financial markets and personal portfolio management. “A lot of top executives actually receive money specifically for their own personal financial education every year, but the average worker gets nothing,” Scranton said. “That’ The S.A.F.E. grand opening kicked off at 3 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Scranton and Westbrook First Selectman Noel Bishop. Following his short speech outlining the S.A.F.E. mission, Scranton and fellow S.A.F.E. representatives fielded questions, handed out schedules of upcoming S.A.F.E.-sponsored events, and provided guests with information about how to schedule a workshop on behalf of a business or organization. Fall-themed decorations, music, food and refreshments were also part of the festivities, which were organized to be fun as well as informative. “Education should be fun and exciting,” Scranton said, “and we’re looking forward to a lot of fun, exciting and extremely valuable educational events taking place right here!” About S.A.F.E. The Scranton Academy for Financial Education (S.A.F.E.) provides education on the principles of finance, investing and personal portfolio management via programs offered in schools and through community organizations. This education focuses on principles as opposed to particular investments. It is intended to educate investors about financial issues in general, and not as a means of advocating any particular financial product or service. The primary goal is to arm consumers with information that helps them make smart investment decisions, and/or prepares them to work knowledgably with their brokers or advisors to develop financial strategies with which they are comfortable. S.A.F.E. is comprised of a network of qualified financial professionals who volunteer their services as financial educators. Its activities are conducted throughout the fiscal year and under the personal direction of S.A.F.E. founder David J. Scranton. S.A.F.E. was incorporated as a non-profit in the State of Delaware, April 19, 2012. All contributions are used to pay for the preparation of teaching materials and other out-of-pocket costs of providing educational services. The foundation also supports other charitable organizations in the areas of financial education by providing cash grants for certain special programs and/or the general operation of such organizations.
