LAS VEGAS - Oct. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Hours of Operation
On November 4, 2013 the Springs Preserve begins winter hours - 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., seven days a week (closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day); hours vary for classes and special events. Gardens and trails close at 4 p.m. or dusk (whichever comes first).

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Dia de Muertos

This 3,000-year-old Hispanic celebration honoring loved ones is full of joy and tradition. Expanding to three days this year, this family-friendly event blends rich customs with exciting activities such as live theater and dance performances, mariachis, face painting, sugar skull decorating and an art exhibition. The Preserve will be decorated with entries from our annual altar contest. Dia de Muertos is made possible in part through the generous contributions of our sponsors, including: NV Energy, MGM Resorts International, Wells Fargo, El Tiempo, ESPN Deportes 1460 AM, Telemundo Las Vegas, KINC-TV Channel 15, La Kalle 99.3 FM, La Nueva 103.5 FM and La Buena 101.9 FM. Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3, 2013 from 4 to 9 p.m.  Admission is $8 adults, $5 children 5 to 12. Ages 4 and under are free. Members receive 50 percent off admission. Online price includes $1 per ticket convenience fee. Tickets are also available for purchase at local Cardenas, La Bonita and Mariana's supermarkets.

Tails and Trails
Trek the Trails and Gardens with your favorite canine! Tail-waggin’ demos include the Metro K-9 Unit, dog training and tricks, and how to make homemade doggy treats. Enjoy retail and service booths and shelter and adoption information, too. Made possible in part through the generous contributions of our sponsors including: MGM Resorts International. Sunday, November 17, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.FREE admission (dogs ONLY; no cats or other animals.)

Science Camps
The Springs Preserve offers full-day, educational camps based on STEM (STEM=Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) curriculum for ages 6-12 - the perfect way to keep learning, even when school’s out! Our full-time, trained Education Team, as well as onsite scientists from the fields of zoology, archaeology, horticulture and more, will lead all activities. Science Camps are offered on all 2013-14 CCSD Teacher In-Service Days—Nov. 4, Feb. 14, May 19 - and each camp has a different theme. On Monday, November 4, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in a class entitled Science Around Us campers explore the Springs Preserve and work with our scientists! Conduct hands-on investigations and learn about zoology, archaeology and horticulture. Camp hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (extended camper care available 6:30 - 9 a.m. and 4 - 6:30 p.m.) $40 per day for members, $50 per day non-members, $10 additional for extended care. Night at the Museum - Despicable Me
Join us for a kids’ night out at the museum! Explore, make crafts, have a pizza dinner and snacks…and settle in for a night of not-too spooky Halloween fun as we watch Despicable Me! Ages 5-12. Saturday, November 16, 5 - 9 p.m. (the registration deadline is Friday, November 15.) $20 members, $25 non-members. Only 125 spots are available for this event on a first-come, first served basis.

Bet on the Farm
Join us for Mario Batali & Joe Bastianich's sustainable farmers market, Bet on the Farm, every Thursday. Weekly cooking demonstrations from growers and vendors give guests tips and tricks to hone their inner green chef to create amazing edibles. Regionally and locally grown seasonal offerings include fruits, vegetables, herbs, fresh eggs, honey, nuts, dates, locally roasted coffee and many more delectable treats. Every Thursday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. inside the Desert Living Center. Access to the market is free. Purchases are cash only.

Ride the Trails - Train and Bike Rides
RIDE THE TRAIN: $3 members, $5 non-members. Narrated life-size locomotive ride around our historic 2.2 mile Exploration Trail departs daily. Check onsite for times. BIKE THE TRAILS:  $6 members, $8 non-members for 1-hour bike rental, helmet included. Weekends, last rental 1 hour before close. Personal bikes not permitted.

EXHIBITS, SHOWS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

Wildlife Preserved

Wolverines, jaguars, ostriches and more! Wildlife Preserved presents 50 different animals, their habitats, life in the wild and what you can do to ensure their survival for generations to come.This diverse animal taxidermy exhibit features rarely seen specimens from the collection of the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. Exhibit on display daily through December 1, 2013. Free for members or included with paid general admission.

Nevada Reflections:  The Silver State in Black & White
These stunning black and white photographs, shot by Cody Brothers, illustrate the past, present and future of water resource challenges faced by the Southern Nevada community and beyond. Showcasing landscapes from a perspective rarely seen, Brothers beautifully captures the rugged landscape that is Nevada, and the fragile resources of those that call it home.The artist resides near Santa Fe, New Mexico and has a large body of work that focuses on the history, culture and wilderness of the southwestern landscape. On display daily 10 - 4 p.m. through January 20, 2014 in the Big Springs Gallery. Free for members or included with paid general admission.

The Butterflies of Iguazú Falls, Argentina
Bill Cooper firstencountered the butterflies of IguazúFalls in 1983. In 2008, he finally made it back to Argentina with a camera in hand. In 5 days he took 5,600 photographs of 99 species. Come see this stunning show of diversity in our Patio Gallery. A professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Irvine, Cooper has been taking photos of butterflies for years and can vividly remember the first one back in 1972. This exhibit will be on display through December 2013 in the Patio Gallery(subject to Patio Gallery availability).Free for members or included with paid general admission.

Mad Science MANIA live show
Mad Scientists are roaming the Springs Preserve! You’re invited into the “lab” for weird, wild and wonderful science fun in this live, interactive show. We’ve got NEW experiments and explosive antics every month! Two shows presented Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. through February 23, 2014 inside the Big Springs Theater. Included with paid general admission.

Mad Science MANIA - Backstage Pass
Want more Mad Science MANIA? A Backstage Pass earns you a prime seat in the lab for extra-exclusive, up-close science adventures and free takeaways. Every young Einstein needs a spark! Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 2 p.m., following the live shows. Through February 23, 2014 inside the Big Springs Theater.$10 members and non-members with paid general admission.
