First New TLDs Added to Internet

FITCHBURG, Wis. - Oct. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .Com is the most popular TLD today. In 2012, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - held a historic application round inviting organizations from around the world to apply to create new TLDs. 1,930 applications (http://www.dotanything.co/New-TLDs.aspx) for new TLDs were filed in ICANN's historic application round, which closed in 2012. Since that time, each application for a new TLD has undergone a rigorous evaluation process which included evaluation of the string itself as well as the applicant's technical capacity and financial capacity for operating a new TLD.  It is expected that over 700 new TLDs will result from this application process, since many of the applied-for TLDs were duplicates of each other.

This week ICANN announced that the first four TLDs from the 2012 application round have been added to the Internet. From this point, each TLD will go through a 'ramp-up' phase during which the applicant gears up to sell domains within the new TLD to the public.

The four new TLDs were added to the Root Zone on October 23, 2013.  These new TLDs are expected to start selling domains to the public in Q1 2014.
