Five New Top Level Domains Launch This Week

FITCHBURG, Wis. - March 2, 2014 - PRLog -- Five new TLDs are scheduled to go to General Availability this week:  .みんな (Japanese for everyone), .careers, .photos, .recipes and .shoes. Domains in the .みんな will become available on Tuesday, March 4th while domains in .careers, .photos, .recipes and .shoes will go to general availability on Wednesday, March 5.

So far this year alone, 28 new TLDs have been launched in an unprecedented expansion of the TLD marketplace. The other TLDs to launch this year were .xn--ngbc5azd, .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles, .ventures, .camera, .equipment, .estate, .gallery, .graphics, .lighting, .photography, .construction, .contractors, .directory, .kitchen, .land, .technology, .today, .sexy, .tattoo, .enterprises, .tips, .voyage and .diamonds.

Prior to 2014, there were just 23 generic TLDs. By the end of 2014 there may be over 700 new TLDs including new generic TLDs like .shop and .web as well as branded TLDs like .BMW and .GAP.

This unprecedented expanstion of the TLD marketplace is a result of an application round held in 2012. In 2012, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - held an application round inviting companies from around the world to apply to create new Top Level Domains. 1,930 applications for new TLDs were applied. Of these, 1,814 applications remain in the active status, while 116 applications have been withdrawn.
