Caught in the Current is a story of two vastly different cultures — America and Ukraine — and their parallel, counterculture pursuits for peace, justice, and civil accord during the summer of 1970. It is also the tale of a first-generation Ukrainian-American caught in the current of conflicting cultures. As Alec struggles to find his identity, he becomes involved in the tumultuous environment of Soviet-occupied Ukraine, where the slightest hint of dissent has disastrous consequences. As a break from his grueling college studies, Alec arranges to tour Europe for the summer with a group of friends. Unbeknownst to the group, Alec agrees to gather information undermine Soviet rule in Ukraine. Even as he aids the counterculture movement for Ukrainian autonomy, Alec still doubts and questions his convictions, revealing the conflicted nature of his identity and an atmosphere every bit as riotous as the revolutions around him. A coming-of-age novel like no other, Caught in the Current is a fascinating exploration of the effect of the past on the present. About the Author Dr. Daniel Hryhorczuk holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
