Ford Debuts the 2014 Fiesta SFE With New EcoBoost Engine

Ford has revealed the 2014 Ford Fiesta SFE, which can be equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

The current 2014 Fiesta is powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder engine with 120 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque. It’s quite fuel efficient at 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission. The SFE package should increase fuel economy to 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.

To satisfy drivers looking for more speed while still maintaining the fuel efficiency, Ford is offering a 1.0L EcoBoost three-cylinder engine. Turbocharged, the engine is capable of producing 123 hp, a bit higher than the current 1.6L. The main difference is in torque: the new engine can produce 148 lb-ft, giving this model quite a bit of kick.

The small engine, which is less than a foot long, uses direct injection to actively deliver fuel to the car’s three cylinders. The vehicle turbocharger is able to force pressurized air into the cylinders leading to more power without reducing fuel economy.

According to Ford and the EPA, the model will be able to get an estimated 32 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. That latter number is especially impressive, being higher than any other pure gasoline car on the market. The engine will be an option on the SFE trim and should be available to consumers in a few months.

Ford is also offering a higher-powered turbocharged version of the base 1.6L that’s able to put out 197 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. While its 35 mpg highway is lower than other models, this engine makes the Fiesta one of the faster cars in its segment.
