Zachary S. Shewmaker was born and raised in Danville, Kentucky. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English and history from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky in 2003. He went on to graduate with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2006. As a law student, Zach represented UGA Law in two national mock trial competitions, he served as a summer judicial clerk for the Western Judicial Circuit, and he practiced with the Western Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney’s Office for a year and a half.

Before joining Van Sant Law, Zach spent over seven years defending motor carriers, their insurers, and tractor-trailer drivers in wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases. He worked the first four of those years with a mid-sized Atlanta transportation firm defending personal injury claims. He spent the following three years in the Atlanta office of a regional firm whose transportation practice group was ranked first in the nation by the Best Lawyers® in America. While working there, Zach was included in the selection of Georgia’s Rising Stars℠ for 2012 and 2013, and he was selected as one of Georgia Trend Magazine’s “2013 Legal Elite.” As a result of working closely with trucking companies and their insurance claims adjusters, he gained valuable insight into how trucking companies and their insurers evaluate and defend cases.
