Determined Republican opposition to popular government programs could make the GOP extinct

Proven and needed entitlement programs have many more supporters than detractors. GOP strategists would be wise to do the math.

NEW YORK - Dec. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- The party of “No” or more accurately “No Ideas” appears to be suffering from a severe deficit of creativity. The GOP has settled into a one trick pony strategy of simply opposing any new proposal the Democrats come up with. A perfect example of this was and is their opposition to Obamacare. While constantly nitpicking and harping on the shortcomings of the program’s roll-out they fail to grasp the most significant and salient fact.

That fact is, that when they the power they utterly failed to acknowledge and constructively deal with a major problem in American society/economy, the tens of millions of people without medical coverage. They simply ignored it. One could call that behavior dereliction of duty. And when the Democrats attempted to fix the problem they fought tooth and nail to stop that from happening.

The shining stars of the Republican Party all seem to have one strategy: slash, cut and kill any government program that doesn’t benefit their corporate masters. They are not really against a big government per se, they just don’t seem to like it when it’s the average folks who benefit as opposed to corporations. Some years ago they had the brilliant idea to privatize Social Security, fortunately the nation rejected their plan, but they never stop trying.

What they don’t seem to get is how deeply unpopular their ideas are with the majority of Americans. It’s almost as if they have embraced the idea of being an opposition party. It’s not hard to see why this might be the case, after all it is much easier to be against something than to do the heavy lifting that is necessary to solve the many complicated issues we are facing today. If they continue down the path they have been on since the election of Barack Obama they may get their wish.

The GOP could end up becoming a permanent minority party, much like what happened to the Conservatives in the United Kingdom. And while permanent might not actually last forever it could be a long time before the people give them the chance to lead the nation again. Cutting the entitlements is an idea possessed by those with no idea on how to grow the economy. It’s an easy and callous solution to go after the most vulnerable in our society to get out of our current financial fix. It’s an answer which runs contrary to the cheerful and optimistic spirit of the American society and therefore has no realistic chance of being embraced by the majority of voters. America is a positive, courageous and forward looking nation. Timid, narrow-minded men and their ideas have never held much sway over the American psyche.
