Posting your resume online can kill your chances of getting hired in this tough job market

From the comfort of his sofa he can post his resume on all the major job sites in record time. He can then sit-back and wait to be contacted by a perspective employer. And when the phone call or the email doesn’t come he can console himself with the knowledge that he did everything that he could to find a job.

What he doesn’t know is that by posting his resume everywhere he has made himself into the opposite of an attractive candidate. Nothing cheapens the perceived value of a commodity like its abundant availability in the marketplace. If he is practically giving it away for free then it stands to reason that what he is offering probably isn’t worth very much. Top candidates aren’t chasing job openings, companies are chasing them.

A job seeker has to market himself as something special. The attitude has to be that while he is interested in a particular job opening he has other options which he is considering. Many job seekers today are desperate but desperation doesn’t sell very well. And nothing screams desperation like posting your resume on every job site. You shouldn’t play “hard to get” but if you portray yourself as too available then you won’t be perceived as particularly valuable.

Another reason not to post your resume online is that it will make it more difficult for you to work with Employment Agencies. While these services don’t exist to help you but rather to use you as a commodity to make money it doesn’t mean that they are of no value to you. If you are smart you can use them to get a job. Companies pay agencies a fee to supply “superior candidates” and if they can get your resume online then you will never have a chance to be a member of that select group.

However the most important reason why you should avoid posting your resume online is that you want to retain the flexibility and freedom to tailor your resume to a particular job opening. You have to be able to do this in order to make yourself appear like a “perfect fit” candidate. By posting your resume online you are committing yourself to only one version of your resume and you eliminate any possibility of having the perfect resume for a job that you are really interested in.
