By: SPI Study Abroad In addition to attending daily Spanish immersion courses and getting an in-depth look at Costa Rican culture, SPI Costa Rica students participate in a worthy community service project during their program. Depending on the needs of the community, this project could include nature preservation, volunteering in an orphanage, doing home renovation, or engaging in a number of other public service initiatives. Upon completion of the Costa Rica program, students will be granted a certificate of completed service hours. Two week participants will receive up to 20 hours of community service, while month participants will receive up to 40 hours. Community service hours are excellent ways to bolster resumes and college applications; Participating in community service while abroad also gives students the chance to truly connect with local inhabitants, and get a good feel for how their abroad community operates. This is an integral part of any true language and cultural immersion experience. For more information about SPI, and for our 2014 Costa Rica summer program details, please visit www.spiabroad.com.
