Self-Publishing Advice: How to Find Time to Write Your First Ebook

Jan. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- I make my living as a freelance writer. But, I also write and self-publish my own ebooks. Since 2002, I’ve published over 50 ebooks. Even though writing is my profession, finding time to write on my own projects is the number one obstacle I face. It’s a constant battle.

If you work a full-time job, or are a stay-at-home parent, for example, finding time to write can be difficult. Following are some things I’ve done to help me get around this obstacle.

1. Write first thing in the morning

I’m a runner, and when I’m training for a marathon, I put my training first. This means I get up and get my run out of the way firs thing in the morning.

What does this have to do with writing an ebook? Well, I’ve found that it helps to do first what you consider most important. So if you have to get up an hour or two earlier before the kids go to school or before you have to report to the office, at least you know you will have gotten some writing done – even if you don’t find time in your schedule the rest of the day.

2. Something’s gotta give

This piggybacks on the last point, but what I’ve found is that when you’re trying to accomplish a goal, most often, something else has to wait or be pulled back on.

This can be everything from house work, to working out, to volunteering. There are only 24 hours in the day. If your schedule is already jam-packed, then accept the fact that – at least for a while – you’re going to have to rearrange things so you can find time to finish your ebook.

3. Find your inspiration

There’s nothing to keep you dedicated to a goal as focusing on what it will mean to you. For example, my inspiration for self-publishing is passive income. I know that the more ebooks I write and publish, the more money I can earn.

Self-publishing is like a retirement nest egg for me. There’s nothing like earning money years from now for something you write today. I published my first ebook in 2002 – and I still earn money from it – over a decade later.

Whatever your inspiration is, tap into it. Close your eyes and imagine what it will feel like once you’ve accomplished your dream.
