200,000 Homes Assessed – What Have We Learnt?

Jan. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Sustainable Homes has been undertaking Carbon Reduction Options for Housing Managers (CROHM) assessments across the country for Housing Associations, Councils and ALMOs. Looking at all the housing providers who have had their stock assessed, what does it tell us about the state of the sector’s stock, if anything?

One thing that stands out for all organisations that manage a property portfolio, is that despite achieving a good average SAP rating, there are still many properties that fail to achieve an A, B or C Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, coming in at a SAP of 68 or less – some much less.

Given that research has shown that to meet the Climate Change Act target of a 80% reduction on 1990 levels of CO2 emissions, properties need to be brought up to a SAP of 81-86, and given the now annual high levels of increase in energy providers charges, improving the energy efficiency of housing stock / improving SAP ratings is essential. Identifying the least energy efficient stock is therefore important not just in raising average SAP, but also in tackling fuel poverty and meeting carbon reduction commitments.
