By: Sheryl Underwood's HBCU Initiative The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville, TN., who sing and travel worldwide. In the late 19th century, they broke racial barriers in the US and abroad, touring to raise money to support their beloved school. They continue the tradition of singing the Negro spiritual around the world, sharing this rich culture globally while preserving this unique music. All proceeds from the concert, sponsored by the Greater LA Alumni Association of Fisk University, will help provide scholarships for local Los Angeles students who will attend Fisk University, located in Nashville, TN, in the Fall of 2014. The event aligns perfectly with Sheryl Underwood’s campaign to raise funds for all 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) as part of her Pack Rat Foundation for Education’s HBCU Initiative. This multi-talented entertainer generously gives of her time and talent to ensure the survival of these institutions so they continue to be an option for men and women who want a college education. According to Underwood, “I’m thrilled to be part of this outstanding program. Music has always been woven into the fabric of HBCUs. Many colleges and universities have historically highlighted their musical groups, like the Fisk Jubilee Singers, as part of their fundraising effort They serve as amazing ambassadors for their institutions.” The “Get Your Praise On HBCU Choir Sing-off“ joins the slate of fundraising initiatives Underwood has launched under the HBCU Initiative, including the Ultimate Battle of the DJs, NPHC Stroll and Step Contests and Empowerment Weekends. Underwood has committed time and resources to producing fundraising events across the country to ensure the survival of HBCUs. On hand to bring greetings and to introduce Underwood on the night of the Fisk Jubilee Singers concert will be Adai Lamar, radio personality and journalist at 102.3 KJLH. In addition to her duties on THE TALK, Sheryl Underwood Radio, fundraising for HBCUs and her entertainment engagements, Underwood is a weekly contributor to the Steve Harvey Show, where Lamar is local host and producer.
