Discover the History of Auburn, Washington

Feb. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- The next addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Auburn by local author Hilary Pittenger. The book is set to release March 3, 2014 and includes over 200 images of days gone past in this Washington city.

In this new pictorial history, author Hilary Pittenger displays historic images to chronicle the unique history of Auburn.  The majority of images were culled from the collection of the White River Valley Museum and include rarely-seen photos of downtown Auburn and local businesses in the 19^th and 20^th centuries.  The book contains highlights and lesser-known information on Auburn’s history, such as Auburn’s many name changes over time.  Stories and images capture what life was like in early Auburn for both Native American residents of the Muckleshoot Tribe and newly-arrived settlers in the mid-to-late 1800s.

Auburn captures the everyday life of working class people in the Pacific Northwest through the decades, showing images of their homes, clothing and activities.  A few rare photographs of early female railroad workers are also highlighted.  Stories included teach readers about the small, farm-town heart of Auburn and explain some of the geographic and economic reasons the city remained so independent.  Pittenger writes, “Since it is arranged in a roughly chronological order, I hope readers will be able to follow the slowly unfolding story of Auburn, and see how a single new industry, technology, or person could change the fate of an entire town.”

•Images of “cutting-edge” technology from different eras, including the first computer used by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1967.

•Shows the golden age of railroading in Auburn, including the original Auburn Yard and the Interurban Railroad.
