"I Have No Idea What's Going On!" Don't worry -- this MIT startup will help you

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Feb. 28, 2014 - PRLog -- geosocial.io (https://beta.geosocial.io/) is a location-based social news service that allows people to see the lives of their communities, cities, and countries on an interactive world map. The web service was launched at MIT on August 26, 2013 and has gained great traction since then. The company has soft-released an Android beta program and will soon release the Android and Iphone apps.

The problem is that even in this age of technology, there still exists an "information gap". When we think about how we acquire or share information, it's through online newspapers or social networks Facebook and Twitter. However, newspapers are not in real-time as they have to be edited and published, and some social media sites have limits on how many "friends" or "followers" one has. Others carry too much information, and we run into the issue of what information is actually relevant and valuable to us.

On geosocial.io, anyone can share anything interesting or important to his or her entire community. The startup company provides a platform for posting, upvoting, and commenting on events at any level of granularity (think Reddit on Google Maps), so that the community can decide what information is important or not. Posts with a greater number of upvotes will have more visibility and vice versa.

The team originally consisted of 4 co-founders (one current MIT student, one MIT alumnus, and two developers based in Japan), but it has grown since then. geosocial.io is now a 7-person startup, having recently added an IPhone developer, a Web UI designer, and a Community Manager.

In the next few months, geosocial.io plans to expand to other colleges in the Greater Boston area.
