By: PATT foundation Plant A Tree Today (PATT) Foundation, a UK registered charity and a Thailand Foundation operating throughout the Southeast Asia region, founded by Andrew Steel, initiated a great charity climb ‘Climb for Change 2014’ in order to showcase the effects of climate change and other environmental issues on our natural wonders globally. Following the Macheme Route, the climb will take approximately 9 days to complete. Being a dedicated sportsman, Andrew initiated this climb to combine the interests of sportsmanship, environmental awareness and those who are up for the challenge. “We need 15 participants whom will raise a minimum amount in order to show their dedication and interest in participating. Proceeds will go towards PATT’s campaign of providing environmental education to students, through ‘JustGiving’ “Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, is a great way to understand the effects of climate change. We are presented with a visual explanation of what is happening due to the changes in the climate as the snow on the peaks continues to recede. We have confirmations from environmental leaders and leading celebrities who are taking part to raise awareness of this global issue. Dr. Ian Redmond and Dr. Ian Singleton along with former Miss Globe, Dolores Couceiro are planning to make the trip and we hope to announce soon a major name from the middle east. We are also talking to a number of the regional networks to film a documentary of this amazing journey” stated Steel Despite the location being close to the equator, it is crowned with ice; however, since 1912, Kilimanjaro has lost 92% of its ice cap. PATT offers this opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for a great cause, as well as getting a once in a life time chance to see and act to protect the beauty this natural wonder as scientists predict that all ice on the mountain may disappear by 2020. Environmental Education Portal PATT is developing an investigational, interactive we based learning tool on environmental issues with a major focus on climate change. Online, there will be learning resources, activities, and discussion areas for students and teachers. Lesson plans will be created in accordance with IB and IGCSE curriculum criteria. The Foundation has already identified over 600 primary schools interested, spanning across the UK, United States, India, South Africa and Sri Lanka. We hope to bring environmental education to as many students as possible through the use of the portal. The preparation of environmentally responsible individuals to take on the leadership positions is vital to the future sustainability of our planet. We are in need of donations for the set-up of the portal including; gaining educational material that is concurrent with IB and IGCSE curriculums, IT set-up and maintenance and to develop an online tool to connect students from all over the world to interact over environmental topics.
