April Is International Guitar Month

ST. PAUL, Minn. - April 3, 2014 - PRLog -- It's estimated that there are 50 million guitar players in the world; 20 million of which reside in the US.

In response to the vast guitar population and a desire to see continued enthusiasm for the instrument, The Guitar & Guitar Accessories Marketing Association (GAMA) designated April 1987 as the first International Guitar Month.

27 years later, guitars are still the best-selling instrument in the world; and in the United States.

In 2013, guitar manufactures produced and shipped almost 2.48 million guitars to U.S. music retailers. Of these, 1.36 million were acoustic guitars. Electric guitars accounted for just shy of 900,000 while bass guitars made up the balance. This represents $1.6 billion in retail value while guitar accessories account for another $500 million as part of the $6.8 billion retail music industry. And this doesn't even account for the used market. There are currently 40,000 used guitars listed on Craigslist in the Top 20 U.S. markets. ebay boasts a whopping 97,200 guitars for sale. Music retail behemoth Guitar Center lists 10,022 used guitars on its site and used instrument retailer, MusicGoRound.com currently shows 8403 used guitars in its inventory. That's 155,600 used guitars from just four sources!

There are a myriad of ways to celebrate International Guitar Month:
• Buy a new guitar
• Join a guitar jam circle
• Play a tune for friends and family
• Sign up for guitar lessons (if you're a little rusty or a new player)
• Teach a child to play guitar
• Go to a Senior Center in your community and play for the residents
