Web Access for Remote Areas on Earth and Beyond

Originally used for network access in outer space, Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) technology is used on networks that have frequent interruptions or long delays. Communication to a spacecraft on another planet will take many minutes to reach the destination. Therefore traditional network protocols are not feasible. DTNs are being used by various space agencies for communicating with satellites and space stations. As a planet rotates, ground stations will lose communications with spacecrafts or satellites on other planets. A satellite with DTN can store the data being transferred until it can forwardthe data when a signal is able to be obtained.

DTN technology has terrestrial useson Earth. Major Internet companies use a DTN to bring Internet access to remote areas that have no means of traditional Internet access. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, and in some cases balloons with communications equipment, can provide Internet access to areas previously inaccessible to the Internet.
