SS14 Hair Trends – All Or Nothing

Wall-flowers need not apply this summer, as the hottest looks of the season are all about the extremes. The two must-have cuts of the season are opposite ends of the scale, either super-long mermaid locks or super-short bob – there’s no prize for sitting on the fence. Here, Shahnaz Amin, a stylist from the Supercuts creative team The Edge, unveils the cuts of SS14:

MANCHESTER, U.K. - April 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Super-long mermaid locks

“All girls dream of becoming a mermaid and this style is fresh from a childhood fantasy. Extra-long, Rapunzel-style locks were seen all over the catwalks at Christopher Kane, Chloe and Topshop Unique, making it a huge trend for summer.

“Opt for a brow-skimming centre parting with soft-shaping around the face blending into the length. A centre parting will show off your features whilst also keeping your hair away from your face in the hot months.

“Long locks are a statement in itself so you can keep the style simple. For the day, simply spritz with a salt spray then tousle random sections with a curling wand like Cara Delevinge. Or, to save time, simply plait damp hair and leave to dry to create a relaxed beach-effect wave.

“After dark, opt for a super-sleek, shiny style. Use a shine spray with heat protection then use straightening irons to smooth fly-aways. This understated style takes minutes to create but provides maximum impact.

“The key to making sure long locks look fab not drab is to keep your hair in top condition. Use a moisturising hair mask like Wella Professionals Enrich Mask (£11.70, Supercuts) once a week to leave hair silky smooth. Always use a quality heat protector and oil like Wella Professionals Thermal Image (£10.75, Supercuts) to prevent hair from drying.

Brilliant bob

The only alternative to super long locks is stylishly short. The bob will be huge again this year but with lots of exciting variations as seen on the SS14 catwalks of Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu.

“Lengths will vary from style to style from a ‘lob’ (long bob) like Lily Collins or, for the more daring, a jaw-skimming cropped bob like Miley Cyrus’s grown-out pixie crop. Speak to your stylist to decide on the best length to suit your face before going for the chop. Pair the bob with a cropped or shattered fringe for a real head-turning style.

“The key to styling the bob is to keep it simple: Go for lots of volume and texture by adding Wella Professionals Perfect Setting (£9.15, Supercuts) like Rita Ora or smooth over the locks with straightening irons for a chic style like Portia Freeman. The ultimate aim is to create a style that shouts ‘it didn’t take long for me to look this good!’

“The bob is a fab cut for summer as it’s low maintenance and keeps hair away from your neck in hot weather. Team your cropped ‘do with one of this season’s sun-kissed hues for added A-list glamour.”
