BRISBANE, Australia - April 29, 2014 - PRLog -- Brisbane, Australia. April 29, 2014 --   A Pacific island country which has adopted Latin as its national language? Preposterous! Of course, but G.F.J. Moir, in his novel Emergencies in the Merambas, explains convincingly how this came about. Although the explanation is convincing it is not quite serious because the book is a satirical comedy, albeit strongly seasoned with adventure and romance.

At the beginning of the tale the protagonist, John Hathaway, a Sydney graduate, is in Cambridge where his further studies have just been halted by an accident. He is offered and accepts a post in the Merambas, where his Latin expertise is needed for a government project.

The islands are peaceful and beautiful, with charming, friendly people enjoying good government and modest prosperity. John gets to know numerous Merambi as well as some fellow Australians, English colleagues and other characters, some dangerous.

In John Hathaway the author G.F.J. Moir has created a likeable and competent hero with a gift tor friendship. He deals with threats, potential disaster and intrigues which erupt unexpectedly as he does his work, meets a stunningly beautiful woman, and plumbs the mystery of the Sacred Document.

The world of 1960, in which the action happens, is lightly sketched in, adding a hint of nostalgia.
