What is the difference between vacuum degasser and mud gas separator

Poor boy degasser is used before shale shaker to remove gas drilling in diameter around 3mm or big bubbles. And the vacuum degasser is used after shale shaker to wipe off the invaded gas from drilling mud quickly, restore drilling mud proportion, keep mud viscosity performance and improve the quality of the drilling mud.

Firstly, vacuum degasser structure design is more complex  than poor boy degasser.

The vacuum degasser is composed by tank, motor system, electronic control system and so on.

Mud gas separator combined with throttle manifold together to separate the free gas within drilling mud.

Secondly, the different working principle is between vacuum degasser and poor boy degasser.

Vacuum degasser working principle

Vacuum degasser mainly used to restore harmful gas. Vacuum degassers are constructed with vacuum pump, mud gas separator, mud tank, motor and control cabinet. When the equipment is working, pipeline tank below will be into the following drilling fluid, making the tank body be in vacuum state. Open vacuum pump and pump some gas to make different pressure between drilling mud and mud tank. So drilling mud will get into the tank through the pipeline. The mud tank is provided with a impeller, In the rapid rotation of the impeller, the drilling fluid within the bubble is broken. Rising gas will be pumped into the mud gas separator through the vacuum pump, In the mud gas separator, toxic hydrogen sulphide will dissolve in water. The rest of the gas are discharged by export of mud gas separator.

Poor boy degasser working principle

Drilling mud with invaded gas flow into the gas mud separator via inlet pipe. Fall down to a number of baffle plates designed in the vessel. Collision increases the exposed surface and downward flow resulting in turbulent flow then gas and fluid separated. Free gas discharged via degasser vent line. The exhaust pipe will transit gas to safe place for ignition. Drilling mud after the degassing will flow into the circulation mud tank.

Because of different working principle, they have different degassing effect. In drilling mud solids control system, the vacuum degasser and the poor boy degasser will be used together, we should not only use poor boy degasser to remove bigger bubbles but also use vacuum degasser to remove smaller bubbles so that we can completely remove harmful bubbles in drilling mud, improving the drilling mud property.
