A key member of the influential Energy & Commerce Committee, where he serves as Ranking Member of its Environment and the Economy Subcommittee, Congressman Tonko has been one of Congress's leading environmental and clean-energy advocates since his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008. He has sponsored and supported numerous bills to help overhaul the nation's energy system, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve our transportation infrastructure. He also introduced legislation to create a comprehensive plan for the Hudson-Mohawk River Basin that will research and protect critical water resources in the Capital Region. If re-elected, Tonko plans to support legislation that will encourage more wind and solar power generation, improve energy efficiency, help get dangerous chemicals out of children's toys and household products, and fight climate change. "Congress needs more environmental leaders like Paul Tonko," said Marcia Bystryn, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters. "Congressman Tonko has amassed an impressive track record of fighting for a cleaner, healthier environment while also helping to build a sustainable, technology-driven economy in the Capital Region. We are proud to endorse Paul Tonko for re-election and we encourage voters who care about clean air, renewable energy and a sustainable economy to support him on Election Day." In response to the endorsement, Congressman Paul Tonko said: "I am humbled to once again receive the endorsement of NYLCV, and I continue to support our shared vision of a greener and cleaner New York that enhances public health, boosts small businesses and moves us away from our crippling dependence on fossil fuels. In Congress, I will continue to fight for policies that protect the environment, keep our water supply clean, and promote energy efficiency while unleashing the innovative spirit of entrepreneurs and inventors to solve some of our most pressing issues."
