Nadel-designed Juanita Tate Marketplace Now Open

LOS ANGELES - Aug. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- Nadel-designed Juanita Tate Marketplace is now open, bringing 77,096 square feet of outdoor retail space with a full-service grocery to the highly underserved surrounding community. Located at 944 East Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles, the $21 million development is situated on a 6.5-acre site, which was formerly used as a scrap-metal plant. Construction began in May 2013 and completed in April 2014.

         “In these urban areas, walkability is key,” said Greg Palaski, principal and project director with Nadel, Inc. “This project provides a much needed retail center and offers jobs and diverse food options to the surrounding community.”

Developed by Regency Centers, in conjunction with Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles (CCSCLA), the center is comprised of four different buildings that include Northgate Market, which occupies a 42,500-square-foot building, a 14,576-square-foot CVS/pharmacy and two additional free-standing shop buildings totaling 20,000 square feet with space for up to 12 small shops. Additional tenants include Chase Bank, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Panda Express, Starbucks, Wabu Grill Teriyaki House, Wing Stop and Yogurtland. The site will also include an educational community center run by CCSCLA.

To create the all-inclusive retail center, Nadel designed two free-standing buildings with the appearance of separate structures for a main street look that combines a small town feel with a commercial environment. Exterior features include brick, tile and plaster walls. Additionally, elements have been incorporated that are visually appealing and reflect the commercial buildings from the surrounding area with high transom windows, cantilevered metal awnings and stepping roof lines. The center also features a public art installation of three 25-foot-tall metal dandelions titled Wish by artist Heath Satow.

“We spent a great deal of time working with Nadel to design a center that looks great and will function well long term,” said John Mehigan, regional officer and vice president of investments with Regency Centers. “This unique design and its ‘main-and-main’ location allowed us to attract a unique group of retailers and restaurants that will serve this community for years to come.”

Nadel designed the center from concept design through design development, provided full construction documents and performed construction administration. Nadel interacted with the now dissolved Community Redevelopment Agency, which acted as the design review board for more than 14 years throughout the planning and approval of this project.  Throughout the planning of the project, Nadel worked with the CCSCLA, particularly with Noreen McClendon, the executive director of the organization and the daughter of Juanita Tate, the individual for whom the center was named.

In addition to Palaski, Nadel’s project team included Fernando Trinidad, senior designer; and Brent Bland, project manager. The general contractor on the project was MATT Construction.

Nadel has worked on a variety of similar projects for Regency Centers in California, including Granada Village in Granada Hills, Heritage Plaza in Irvine, Seal Beach Center in Seal Beach and Falcon Ridge Town Center in Fontana. Nadel also designed the recently completed Azalea Regional Shopping Center in South Gate, California.
