HOUSTON - Aug. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- On Thursday, September 25 through Saturday, 27, 2014,

 Natalie Madeira Cofield to deliver Urban Tech Weekend Keynote

attendees from across the U.S. will gather in Houston for Urban Tech Weekend 2014.  The nation's premier urban STEM development event is being held at the Wyndham Houston West Energy Corridor, 14703 Park Row, Houston, TX 77079. The event's host, the National Black Information Technology Leadership Organization (NBITLO), has announced Urban Tech Weekend is offering open registration free to the public until September 15.

"Diversifying the number of minorities in STEM related careers is critically important to innovation and advancement of our nation," said NBITLO Founder Andrew West. "That's why we have made registration free giving more job seekers, students and mid-career professionals' access to a wealth of information that Urban Tech Weekend provides. Minorities are the emerging majority and must be equipped and empowered to fuel our workforce in the U.S. and globally. Urban Tech Weekend offers three days of innovation discovery for technologists, employers, entrepreneurs and other leaders of the innovation community for mutual opportunity advancement."

More than 50 nationally recognized thought-leaders in information technology and tech entrepreneurs will deliver powerful keynotes, workshops and interactive panel discussions. The event's featured keynote speaker is President and CEO of the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce and Founding President of the Austin Black Technology Council Natalie Madeira Cofield. Cofield is an entrepreneur, advocate and speaker on all things business and diversity. Her work has spanned continents, communities and corporations, and currently, she can be found impacting lives and the bottom-line at organizations in cities like Austin, New York, DC, LA, Nairobi and beyond.  Cofield will speak on the state of information technology advancement among minority technologists.

 Urban Tech Weekend

Attendees will experience three days of dynamic programming, which include:

*    Thought-provoking keynotes and two focused roundtable discussions

*    Over three days of IT provided professional resources

*    High Tech Expo and Diversity Career Fair

*    STEM Thought-Leadership Symposium

*    Code-a-Thon

*    Authors' Showcase

*    Countless Networking, Empowerment Events and Mentorship Opportunities

*    Urban Innovators Awards Gala

"It is widely known that the technology industry lacks diversity," said West. "About one in 14 technology workers is black or Latino, both in Silicon Valley and nationally. According to the most-recent census data, Blacks and Latinos make up 13.1 and 16.9 percent of the U.S. population, respectively, yet are also sorely underrepresented in C-level technology positions. I echo the excitement of our executive team about the transformative nature of Urban Tech Weekend. Our year-long programming is a game-changer for minority youth seeking careers in STEM and to connect, grow and enhance the careers of current IT professionals while also sourcing budding entrepreneurs and innovators."

Urban Tech Weekend culminates with the NBITLO Urban Innovators Awards Gala. During the gala, the best of the best in urban innovation, STEM and the technology community at-large will be recognized for their efforts to make a difference in their educational opportunities, innovations, inventions and diversity hiring practices. The gala will be held on Saturday, September 27, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, 4807 Caroline Street, Houston, TX 77019.

Through its sponsorship and exhibiting packages, Urban Tech Weekend offers corporations and businesses the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to cultivating a diverse workforce and bridge the digital divide.
