Spread across two adjacent buildings and situated along Brooklyn's waterfront in the Sunset Park neighborhood, the studios will feature painters, sculptors, photographers, and experimental mixed media artists. For one weekend only, guests can visit over 85 studios, meet the artists, explore finished art and works-in-progress, and join a tour to experience the rich history of the Brooklyn Army Terminal buildings. The studio program expanded from 20,000 to 60,000 sq. ft. in 2009 to accommodate the growing need of space from local artists. About chashama: chashama, which means “to have vision” in Farsi, nurtures artists by providing them with affordable work, and presentation space. Working in close partnership with the real estate industry, chashama transforms unused properties into creative spaces for artists, allowing works and ideas to flourish. Currently, chashama manages 125 artist studios, six galleries, five curated office lobbies, two performance venues, and provides affordable artist housing. In the past year, chashama distributed over 250,000 sq. ft. of donated space, supporting all artists and their visions. A connector of art and real estate since 1995, chashama has placed more than 12,000 artists into 60 revitalized spaces, and presented over 2,500 free events reaching an audience of over 2 million across New York City.
