FACT Operators to Train on Vortex Simulators Ahead of STS Crane Deployment

MONTREAL - Sept. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- CM Labs Simulations have been awarded a contract to provide Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal (FACT) with two high-fidelity Vortex simulators for port equipment operator training.

The simulators replicate new STS cranes scheduled for Q1 2015 delivery to the terminal, and will assure operator readiness prior to full commissioning of the cranes.

CM Labs’ unique system of swappable controls simultaneously provides FACT with the ability to train for its existing straddle carrier operations.

The acquisition of the Vortex Simulators is a key component of FACT’s aggressive training strategy, developed in the context of a 30-year plan that aims to “increase vessel turnaround and position Port Adelaide as a world-class container facility,” according to Peter Cheers, FACT’s General Manager.

“Significant” cost savings and productivity gains

When factoring in training for new operators, as well as compliance-required refresher training, cost savings are significant, says David Ower, FACT’s Safety Training & Environment Manager.

These savings accrue from reduced equipment wear and tear, and from the training effectiveness that is a characteristic of the simulators’ 24/7 availability.

The Vortex Simulators will be delivered in a custom-fitted 40’ ISO shipping container that includes a dedicated instructor station, and allows multiple students to train simultaneously.

“Our objectives at FACT were to select a simulation package that will allow new and existing operators to be trained and tested in a virtual operating environment for both STS crane and straddle carrier,” says Owen.

“Following an extensive research program we visited a Vortex Simulator to see for ourselves how realistic the simulation could be, and were amazed at the detail the high fidelity simulations provided plus the scalability to accommodate our specific requirements with regards to accommodating multiple equipment types.”

CM Labs’ Vortex Simulators can be configured for any port equipment and operational requirements.

The specialized VxHarbour configuration is characterized by its immersiveness, enhanced by OEM crane seating, controls, and information displays.

Along with full replication of the actual FACT environment—including layout, vehicles, and vessels—the VxHarbour’s 10 high-resolution LCD displays provide a complete field of view. The operator seat is equipped with a 3 degree-of-freedom electromechanical motion platform to reproduce the acceleration and vibration experienced while operating the actual equipment.

The simulator replicates full control of the spreader bar, and includes interfaces to correspond with load indicators, trolley position, and a container management system.

The deployment of the VxHarbour simulator model marks the second recent customer win for CM Labs in Australia.
