By: Beat Hotel Oktoberfest was established in October of 1810 by Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (crowned as King Ludwig I) in celebration of his marriage to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities (an unusual occurrence at the time) held in front of the city gates to celebrate the event. It was decided that each year they would hold these festivities; Cities around the world hold Oktoberfest celebrations modeled after the original event in Munich, including in Cambridge MA. The 36th Annual Harvard Square Oktoberfest and HONK! Festival features live entertainment, dozens of street vendors, arts and crafts, sidewalk sales and a whole lot more. The streets of Harvard Square will be reclaimed for horns, bikes and feet between the hours of 12:00PM and 6:00PM! During all the exciting outside festivities that the Harvard Square Oktoberfest has to offer (and well into the night hours), guests can take a break without missing out on any Oktoberfest fun by stopping in and enjoying an ice cold beer from Harpoon Brewery including its IPA, Octoberfest, UFO Pumpkin Ale and Grateful Ale, as well as Cape Ann Brewing Co.’s Fisherman's Kölsch and Amber Lager in addition to other specialty beers. In honor of Oktoberfest, The Beat’s kitchen, led by Executive Chef Ignacio Lopez, will step away from their regular menu and feature only specialty German items including Bavarian sausages, roasts, sauerkraut, schnitzel, pretzels, strudel and more. From 12:00PM to 6:00PM guests can enjoy traditional German drinking songs performed by The Bavarian Hofbrau Band. Founded over 20 years ago, The Bavarian Hofbrau Band perfected the oompah style band. Members have visited the Old Vienna Hofbrau in Montreal, the World's Fair in Tennessee and have even traveled to various cities and towns in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The evening’s entertainment will take guests on a tour of Europe, starting in Vienna, going north into Bohemia, then west through Northern Germany and then south through the Black Forest, Bavaria and finally Liechtenstein. Don’t want to come by early? No problem, there will be more fun Oktoberfest music from 7:00PM to 11:00PM!
