Follow on Google News | The Detroit Public Library Launches New Digital Collection of Rare Images“DPL’s Special Collections have a longstanding and rich tradition of serving scholars, researchers and the general public,” said Jo Anne G. Mondowney, the Library’s Executive Director. “This new service means that any user – locally, nationally or internationally – can now remotely access the wonderful photographs and other items that are located in our treasured collections.” DPL’s Digital Collections will allow users to remotely access photographs and other items from the Burton Historical Collection, National Automotive History Collection, E. Azalia Hackley Collection of African Americans in the Performing Arts, Ernie Harwell Sports Collection and the Rare Book Collection. Donors to the project included the National Automotive History Collection's Board of Trustees, Detroit Public Library's Friends Foundation, and Nicolas and Diane Quintana. Additionally, DPL was fortunate to receive a generous grant in June 2014 from MotorCities National Heritage Area. Nearly 30,000 images are from the Nathan Lazarnick Photograph Collection, a collection largely devoted to the automobile with an emphasis on individual automobiles, races, tours, drivers, auto shows, and auto plants from the first quarter of the 20th century. "After many years of hard work by our dedicated staff, and with strong support from our donors, we are excited to showcase the Detroit Public Library's rich and varied collections to a world-wide audience," said Mark Bowden, Coordinator for Special Collections.
