By: Alta Lodge Alta, Utah— Alta Performance Ski Camps, based at Alta Lodge, are for advanced to expert skiers who want to take their skiing experience at Alta and Snowbird to a new level. The three-day camps, led by Stephen Helfenbein and Dr. Collin Bywaters, take skiers to expert terrain to advance their all-mountain ski tactics and techniques. The camps take a progressive approach to coaching skiers off the hill as well, instructing them about dry land training for better skiing fitness. “These camps are for skiers who are already comfortable with most of the terrain at Alta and Snowbird. We coach them to adapt their skiing to the terrain and changes in snow conditions,” The three-day, four-night camps are based at Alta Lodge and include three full days of coaching, two Alta lift passes and one Alta/Snowbird lift pass, performance demo skis, alignment and physical evaluation with a biomechanics professional, video analysis, and evening presentations with two dry land training sessions. The camp includes four nights of lodging, full breakfast and four-course dinner daily. December rates: $1,998 per person double occupancy, $2,324 single occupancy; February and March rates: $2,315 double, $2,938 single. Rates include tax and Lodge service charge. About the Coaches Dr. Collin Bywaters came to Utah from the Pacific Northwest in 1996 and has been teaching skiing in Little Cottonwood Canyon ever since. The Wasatch has allowed him the opportunity to meld the technical aspects of his ski racing background to big mountain freeskiing, with exciting results. “Skiing is at the root of my soul, and inspiring folks to resist skiing complacency is my passion.” Stephen Helfenbein has been a full-time ski instructor at Alta’s Alf Engen Ski School for the last 14 years. During this time he has specialized in the development of expert ski coaching. The highlight of this experience has been the creation and success of the Alta Freeride Division (AFD). About the Lodge Opened in 1940 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad as Alta's first ski hotel, the Lodge has been owned and operated by the Levitt family since 1959.
