By: San Bernardino Citizens for Public Integrity Earlier today, Aguilar had reached a lead of just over 1,600 votes against opponent Paul Chabot. Aguilar declared victory. What voters didn't know was that the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters had failed to disclose to the public that 63,000 ballots cast by county residents were sitting in its offices, not counted. Of those 63,000 ballots, around 16,000 were cast by residents of the 31st congressional district. Poll watchers leaked the information, and by the end of the day, local media reported the uncounted ballots on Twitter. Additionally, sources say that election officials attempted to convince Chabot aides that counting the ballots was not worth the effort because "Aguilar will still win." The San Bernardino County Elections Office is led by our Registrar of Voters, Michael J. Scarpello. Aguilar and Scarpello are politically connected.
