Kolesar & Leatham attorney elected to prestigious international law post

LAS VEGAS - Dec. 2, 2014 - PRLog -- LAS VEGAS (Dec. 4, 2014) – Robert J. Caldwell, a shareholder with Las Vegas law firm Kolesar & Leatham, has been elected President of the UIA Litigation Commission. The UIA (Union Internationale des Avocats/International Association of Lawyers) is the oldest international association of lawyers in the world, with more than 2,000 individual members and 200 bar associations from over 110 countries.

Caldwell is currently the only Nevada member of the UIA. As president, he will organize the Litigation Commission’s activities for the next three years, including its programs at the next UIA Congress in October 2015 in Valencia, Spain. At prior annual Congresses, he has spoken on various panels on topics ranging from legalized sports betting, to representing gaming companies in litigation matters. Most recently, Caldwell spoke about the need to adequately fund the court system, specifically citing the need for a new Court of Appeals in Nevada. Approximately 600 lawyers from around the globe attend the Congress each year.

“Bob Caldwell has long been an active leader in the American Bar Association with experience handling international law matters,” said Robert Kolesar, managing partner of Kolesar & Leatham. “Serving as president of this prestigious international commission highlights how highly-regarded he is among his peers around the world.”

Commenting on the importance of serving the UIA, Caldwell said, “Las Vegas is an international city. We represent local companies that do business around the world, as well as international companies looking to do business in Las Vegas. It is important for us to understand how foreign legal systems operate and what foreign clients need from their lawyers. Serving as an officer of the UIA helps me to better represent my clients’ needs at home and abroad. It also provides our clients with a network of trusted legal advisors around the globe.”

The UIA Litigation Commission is one of the UIA's most active commissions and covers practically all aspects of dispute resolution, including the legal, practical and procedural issues involved in litigation.

Dr. Mark C. Hilgard, a partner with Mayer Brown in Frankfurt, Germany and the immediate past-president of the UIA Litigation Commission, congratulated Caldwell on his election. “Leading the UIA Litigation Commission is a great honor, and I have no doubt Mr. Caldwell will serve with distinction.”

Caldwell received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Alabama School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University (Ohio). He also studied international banking law at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Prior to law school, Caldwell worked for U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell advising the Senator on matters of military and foreign affairs. He remains an active member of the Las Vegas community and has been recognized for his service to the Children’s Advocacy Program (CAP) of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.
