Zurn Plays Key Role in “Hurry-up Offense” for Fast Reconstruction of Florida Citrus Bowl

ERIE, PA – Zurn Industries, LLC provided numerous products for the large-scale, expedited reconstruction of one of college football’s iconic stadiums, the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL.

Everything below the stadium’s upper deck was demolished and reconstructed as part of an overall modernization project for a venue that dates back to 1936. The $200 million project began in January 2014 and was finished in only ten months, providing Orlando with an 85 percent new stadium.

Zurn provided made-to-order products for new restrooms, concessions, kitchen facilities, locker rooms for athletes and game officials and a separate team facilities building.

“Zurn’s Custom Specification Drainage products and carrier banks were engineered, approved, ordered and shipped in less than four weeks,” says Bill Verdecchia, Director of Specification Drainage Product Marketing & Engineering for Zurn.

The roster of Zurn high-performance products used in this project is lengthy, including stainless steel linear floor drains, lavatory and urinal carrier banks, closet carriers, storm water drainage, custom debris covers, wall hydrants, cleanouts and light-duty grease traps, floor sinks, floor drain stabilizers and more.

Tharp Plumbing Systems, based in Orlando, performed the plumbing system installations.

“Zurn carriers enabled us to cut the installation time in half for water closets, urinals and lavatories,” says Jim Tharp, Owner/CEO of Tharp Plumbing says. “Feedback we received from other members of the project team indicated they were impressed by the speed of installation – a week to two days, a day to a few hours.”

Based on recommendations from Tharp Plumbing, the specification of the Zurn products was handled by TLC Engineering for Architecture, based in Orlando and by Bobes Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc. of Maitland, FL.

“We had no room for timeouts,” says Dale Peterson, Senior Plumbing/FP Specialty Designer of TLC. “It was essential that the plumbing products deliver, not only excellent quality and performance, but also easy and fast installations – and they did.”
