Follow on Google News | Why I Chose to Work for TurnKey CorrectionsBy: Rob Allen Policing has been a pretty sweet gig. After more than 25 years working for both a police department and a sheriff’s office, I was in a really comfortable job. I was blessed to work for a sheriff for whom I had a great deal of respect as a courageous and ethical leader, I liked my coworkers, the job was intellectually challenging, the salary and benefits were outstanding, and there were some great perks like a take home car (with lights and a siren!). I have had several opportunities to leave my current job: I have been invited to apply for police chief jobs, jobs in corporate security and even jobs in technology sales. Until the opportunity to work with Turnkey Corrections arose I hadn’t seriously considered leaving police work for any of these jobs. So what was it that made me decide that Turnkey was the right place to work? There were three key areas that helped me decide that Turnkey Corrections was a good fit for me. First, it’s what the company does. I never realized how hard it is to run a jail until I left a police department for a sheriff’s office. Jails are incredibly complex operations. Imagine running a business where you never knew how many customers you were going to get, the customers may try to attack you or other customers, a judge is telling you where and when you have to have prisoners in court, and you are also responsible for the proper care and feeding of all your customers—many of whom have specialized needs in the areas of medical care, mental health, diet, and who they can see and talk to. If jails were a “business,” Second, it’s how Turnkey Corrections does it: Turnkey listens to people who use their services and fearlessly adapts technology to meet the needs of its customers. The people at this company don’t assume they know what jails need; rather they listen to the people who run jails and adjust the company to meet the need of the jails. That may sound like common sense, but there are a lot of vendors out there who offer a product or service and expect the customers to adjust to the needs of the company offering the service. Turnkey Corrections also takes responsibility for every element of the service they deliver—we manufacture the kiosks rather than buy them from somebody else, we write the software that drives the system, we fulfill orders for products, and if something goes wrong, we answer the phone, in Hudson, WI, not in Bangalore. Finally, it’s about the people. I had the opportunity to meet with several people at Turnkey Corrections before deciding this was the place I wanted to work. I never liked working with cops who waited to be dispatched on call. I like working with the cops who were always working—looking for car prowlers, burglars, and other predators; someone else could work with the slugs that found a shady spot to park and wait to be called. Turnkey Corrections is full of people who don’t sit on their hands waiting for things to happen; rather, it is a company built by people who look for ways to do the job faster, better, and increasing our customer base. I have been lucky enough to work with some of the best people in public safety; now I am looking forward to working with the best people serving the public safety field.
