The BCIR is a highly specialized version of the Kock Pouch, which itself is a unique operation performed by very few surgeons in the country and the world.  The BCIR is designed for people who would otherwise require a conventional Brooke ileostomy which mandates the continuous wearing of an external appliance or bag to collect digestive waste.  This operation is for patients who need to undergo removal of their entire large intestine (colon and rectum), usually for Ulcerative Colitis (UC), or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), as well as other conditions including colonic inertia and some patients with Crohn’s disease that is limited to the large intestine.  The BCIR is also an excellent option for people who have undergone the ileoanal J pouch procedure and who have a poor outcome.
