Don J. Schiller, MD, FACS To Speak At United Ostomy Association Of America Conference In 2017

IRVINE, Calif. - June 17, 2016 - PRLog -- Don J. Schiller, MD,FACS, renowned expert in the Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir (BCIR), has agreed to present about the Barnett Continent Internal Reservoir procedure at the 2017 United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA)  conference in Irvine, CA August 22-26, 2017 with the theme "Journey to a Bright Future. In 2011 Dr. Schiller spoke at the Nevada Conference themed "Seize the Opportunity."

The UOAA is an association devoted to improving awareness of Ostomy surgery. An Ostomy is a surgically created opening in the human body which aides in the discharge of bodily wastes. It can result from birth defect, disease, or injury. Ostomy surgery enables the millions of people in the United States and around the world with ostomies to live normal, healthy, active and productive lives.

Dr. Schiller is a renowned expert in Continent Ileostomy surgery, also called a Continent Diversion. This is an option for many people to avoid the need to wear an external appliance or pouch to collect digestive waste with a conventional ileostomy. Instead a tube is painlessly inserted through a small stoma (ostomy opening) several times a day to evacuate the waste into the toilet receptacle. Only a small patch is worn over the stoma.

Since 1989 Don Schiller, MD, FACS has been performing- the BCIR (Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir).-- the Barnett version of the Kock pouch. Dr. Schiller does the BCIR exclusively at Olympia Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He has also operated on many people with malfunction of their Kock pouch or ileoanal J-pouch, and he performs ileostomy reversal for people with a conventional Brooke ileostomy. Dr. Schiller graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and did his Surgical Residency at UCLA Medical Center.
