Starkey Mortgage Donates Over $54,000 to La Escuelita during 2015 Production Awards Trip

PLANO, Texas - Feb. 13, 2015 - PRLog -- During the 2015 Production Awards Trip, Starkey Mortgage (WR Starkey Mortgage, LLP NMLSR# 2146) partnered with La Escuelita, a local school in the community of Bonfil, outside of Cancun, Mexico. For team building purposes, company employees participated in several challenges including an obstacle course, puzzles and other games. As each challenge was complete, the teams were paid with fake money in order to “buy” bicycle parts. They then built a total of seven bikes for underprivileged children at the school. Feeling so touched by Mrs. Sonia Cejas, the leader of La Escuelita, and the children she helps on a daily basis, they quickly realized building bikes was simply not enough. By the end of the trip the company along with its employees donated over $54,000 to the school. That’s enough money to build a brand new school where kids can feel comfortable and safe receiving an education.

Sonia Cejas started the school after seeing many children in her community had to drop out of public school due to the lack of official documents or to very extreme poverty conditions. She took initiative and decided to start giving basic lessons to kids and assistance to parents, in order for them to get the necessary documents that would allow their children to be reincorporated into regular schools. She started in the backyard of her house with 7 kids a few years ago and currently she and her crew support a bit more than 100 kids, from Kindergarten to Junior High every day. They not only give them lessons and guidance to get their documents and school certificates, but they also complement their labor offering them breakfast to ensure they optimize their performance while studying.

Owner and Director, Scott Benson, was deeply touched by Mrs. Cejas and the children of La Escuelita. He and everybody else were more than happy to go beyond what had been asked of them. “This wasn’t something we planned, it just happened.
