  But of course they are not exclusive to the circus performance and often appear at other type of events from shopping centres to birthday parties.That is where problems occur with clown phobia.Clowns are larger than life and the face make-up can be horrific when viewed close up. In a circus or theatre the clown has that distance from the audience and is therefore less intimidating.When close up the response can be fear and upset for both children and some adults too!

  That is why Smartie Artie is a children's entertainer and not a clown.
