Follow on Google News | Surgical experts highlight challenges in performing rhinoplasty in Middle Eastern patientsPatients are encouraged to maintain a natural look in order to balance out facial features
Most patients of the Middle Eastern ethnicity seeking rhinoplasty request that the nose look as natural as possible to avoid ethnic incompatibility. It is important for surgeons to maintain proportionate facial features in the patient. According to Dr Mohsen Naraghi, President, Middle East Academy of Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery; Faculty Board, Otorhinolaryngology Research Centre, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran “There are two important facts in surgical procedures for Middle Eastern rhinoplasty patients. First of all it is important to avoid reducing and reshaping the cartilages to a great extent, instead of removing them. Reduced noses are more susceptible to reveal the negative impacts of scar contracture over the time. So the principle of structural augmentation and support, especially in the base of the nose, is of great importance to avoid complications. Dr Naraghi will discuss Middle Eastern rhinoplasty at the 12th Middle East Update in Otolaryngology Conference & Exhibition (ME-OTO), organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, held the Madinat Jumeirah Arena in Dubai on 19-21 April 2015. “Another important aspect surgeons and patients need to take in to consideration is proportionality of the shape of the nose within the overall facial structure. About one fifth of Middle Eastern patients who request rhinoplasty have an underdeveloped chin. The chin, like the nose, is in a prominent position on the face and plays very important role in facial profile. The important relationship between the nose and chin may be underestimated not only by most of the patients, but also by facial plastic surgeons that are focused on performing the rhinoplasty only,” commented Dr Naraghi End
