March 10, 2015 - PRLog -- Girl Power 2 Cure, a national nonprofit Rett Syndrome organization, presented their inaugural  "Superhero of the Year" award to Amy Adams, Team Zoe and the city of La Porte, IN. Team Zoe is inspired by local La Porte student, Zoe Adams, who suffers from Rett Syndrome, a severe neurological disorder that mainly affects girls.

Led by Zoe's mom, Amy Adams, Team Zoe has spearheaded an incredible amount of awareness in the La Porte community as well as raised close to $16,000 in 2014 alone. The award, an engraved crystal vase, was presented in person to Amy in Orlando, FL on February 21, 2015 at the Team GP2C Disney Princess Half Marathon team dinner.

In addition to recognizing the efforts of everyone involved directly with Team Zoe, Girl Power 2 Cure thanks the city of La Porte for their support of all the fundraisers for the cause as well their role in spreading awareness. La Porte ranks #1 in where GP2C Facebook followers reside, as well as #1 in visitors to the GP2C website.

Amy shares, "I don't know what to say. I'm shocked, proud, happy, crying....all wrapped up into one emotion. I am so proud of my team and my community. Thank you to everyone for believing in me and Zoe."

Ingrid Harding, GP2C Executive Director, says "we are so lucky and honored to have Team Zoe's support. Amy's passion is contagious. She gives so much of her time and energy to this fight for her daughter. We believe the future is bright for Zoe and the hundreds of thousands of other girls battling Rett Syndrome. We have funded close to $1 million in research and helped support hundreds of families nationwide. We could not do that without the outstanding efforts of people like Amy and communities like La Porte."

About Rett Syndrome:

Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that almost exclusively affects females. Every 90 minutes another little girl is born "normal," only to be robbed of her ability to speak, walk, crawl, and use her hands between the ages of 1 and 3. Complications include seizures, sudden death in their sleep and scoliosis.

Rett Syndrome is caused by a single spontaneous gene mutation that any baby girl has an equal chance of acquiring.  It is considered the most physically disabling of the autism spectrum disorders and is as prevalent as Cystic Fibrosis, ALS and Huntington's Disease. There is no treatment, but in 2007 researchers proved in the lab that Rett Syndrome can be reversed, giving it the potential to be the first curable neurological disorder and playing a key role in understanding other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia and Parkinson's.
