Wally Bivins marks the conclusion of his tenure at Pottery Northwest with an exhibition of new work entitled Tell your friends "I'm an Artist!" The title of the show is inspired by the "learn to draw" ads in old comic books and reflects Bivins' tongue-in-cheek appreciation for many iconic images of the ’50s. Wally Bivins has been associated with the Pottery Northwest studio for more than 15 years, the past 11 as its executive director. In that time he established a long-term artist residency program with applicants coming from around the country, continued to build the professional quality of the facility, and doubled enrollment in community classes taught by the artists in residence and occasional guests. As the pottery's executive director, Bivins embraced the work of the studio as his focus but never stopped wanting to touch clay. "I enjoy making pots,” he says, “and I marvel at the responsiveness of clay, the sheer pleasure of working with such a sensual material." Bivins adds: "It has been very rewarding to be among artists, aspiring artists and our students. I have enjoyed their struggles and triumphs vicariously. The need to be a maker as well as a thinker is still important to the human condition. The great idea is best manifested in a great object, and it is not an easy task.” End
