Follow on Google News | Slow Down and Feel the PorcelainPottery Northwest Presents "welcome, more than a feeling" - new work by SKaye; Reception: Friday, August 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Exhibition continues through August 28
SKaye received her BFA in Product Design with a minor in Industrial Ceramics fromParson's School of Design in New York City. This training is still evident in herwork, which has a clean modern aesthetic and seductively tactile surface. Working solely in porcelain and a simple colour palette of white, black and blue, she applies the industrial method of slip casting on an intimate scale. She then sands (instead of glazes) the outside surface where it will meet your hand to give the work an incredibly smooth feeling. Her pieces are signed SKaye - utilizing her first initial and full last name to appear gender neutral. "It's my small part in the ongoing battle for equality for women. Even in clay, we earn less." About Sarah Kaye SKaye spent 12 years working in advertising and recruitment before moving to Seattle from Melbourne, Australia, as an "Amazon Wife." No stranger to international moves, she boasts a résumé that reads like a cosmopolitan culture fest: London, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo and Australia — places that have also shaped her work. Her 2013 arrival in Seattle brought her back to clay at Pottery Northwest, where her re-entry into the ceramic field has been well received. Her work is carried in stores around the Seattle area, including The Bellevue Arts Museum and The London Plane. One of her cups was featured in Starbucks' national launch of its Flat White beverages earlier this year (http://sarahkaye.net/ End
