Follow on Google News | A Tribute to Beat Street comes to B.B. King'sThe original author of the first Hollywood hip hop film will be making a rare public appearance to discuss the film in New York City.
By: Steven Hager Books "The original script was written about the fictional little brother of a Black Spades leader and social revolutionary called Soulski," explains Hager. "His death had a powerful impact on the Black Spades head of communications Afrika Bambaataa. in the script, Soulski's younger brother goes through a voyage of pain and discovery and results in him writing "The Message," elevating hip hop into new territories, something Melle Mell did when he wrote the original "message" rap in his first record Super Rappin'. The original script had lots of violence, sex and drugs, all which disappeared." In fact, everything disappeared, and only Hager's characters names were left at the end of the process. Hager has published the original script along with almost everything else he wrote on the topic in the 1980s and he still holds out hope his real story will someday make it to the big screen. Come to the Beat Street tribute at BB King's on April 11, and Hager will explain how Phase 2 (the Picasso of Hip Hop) got cut out of the film at the very last second, much to Hager's dismay. Artist Ed Piskor is currently working on a strip involving the making of the film for his epic cartoon history titled, Hip Hop Family Tree, and will be revealing the inside story. Grandwizzard Theodore, Jazzy Jay and Grandmaster Caz are expected to perform, as well as many other luminaries from the first generation.Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 on the day of the show.
