Palm Beach Neurological Center Gathers Participants for Alzheimer’s Disease Study

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - April 21, 2015 - PRLog -- The Palm Beach Neurological Center is proud to announce its continued involvement in the STARBEAM Study. This study will track Alzheimer’s patients from around the world to determine the effectiveness of certain types of Alzheimer’s disease treatments. The study participant will be engaged in the study for 28 weeks. During the study, the participant will receive either a trial medication or a placebo; either medication will be available in pill form. This study will help researchers from around the world determine which kinds of medications work best to combat the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The Palm Beach Neurological Center is still accepting new patients for this study.

The Purpose of Studying Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease where the brain cells die over an extended amount of time, usually over a period of years. As this disease progresses, cognitive functioning decreases significantly, to the point where the patient cannot complete daily activities.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Any treatment that doctors prescribe now generally only has a very moderate effect. There have been no new Alzheimer’s disease drug treatments in the past ten years. More research is needed to determine the best kinds of treatment to prevent the occurrence and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Participating in the STARBEAM Study

The STARBEAM Study is geared toward patients who are over 50 years old and who have mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The patient must have a caregiver that will attend doctor’s visits with them and cannot suffer from any other type of disease that may affect the patient’s mental ability (e.g., Parkinson’s disease or schizophrenia). Certain applicants may not be able to participate because of their current medications.

Those who qualify to participate in the study will take a medication once per day. The medication will either be a placebo or a new type of drug that may help prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The study will last 28 weeks.
