Follow on Google News | Palm Beach Neurological Center Gathers Participants for Alzheimer’s Disease StudyBy: Palm Beach Neurological Center The Purpose of Studying Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease where the brain cells die over an extended amount of time, usually over a period of years. As this disease progresses, cognitive functioning decreases significantly, to the point where the patient cannot complete daily activities. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Any treatment that doctors prescribe now generally only has a very moderate effect. There have been no new Alzheimer’s disease drug treatments in the past ten years. More research is needed to determine the best kinds of treatment to prevent the occurrence and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Participating in the STARBEAM Study The STARBEAM Study is geared toward patients who are over 50 years old and who have mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The patient must have a caregiver that will attend doctor’s visits with them and cannot suffer from any other type of disease that may affect the patient’s mental ability (e.g., Parkinson’s disease or schizophrenia) Those who qualify to participate in the study will take a medication once per day. The medication will either be a placebo or a new type of drug that may help prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The study will last 28 weeks. Benefits of Participation This study is offered completely free of charge. In fact, any study-related consultation and medications are offered for free. Participants will also be compensated for travel, parking, and food expenses. Of course, Palm Beach Neurological Center offers the very best in study-related medical care, so that is an added benefit as well. Participants may be able to receive a brand new treatment that is designed to help with memory, reasoning, and thinking. Perhaps the greatest benefit, however, is knowing that your participation could not only help your mental condition, it could also significantly benefit the millions of people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease currently and the millions more who will suffer from this debilitating disease in years to come. Your involvement could change how people around the world live with Alzheimer’s disease, which includes those enduring the disease and their caregivers.
