Follow on Google News | Horizons National Honors Christy Edwards with Annual Leadership Award, Its Highest HonorHorizons Savannah is thrilled to announce that its executive director, Christy Edwards, has received Horizons National’s highest honor, the Horizons Leadership Award, at a ceremony in Connecticut.
Established in 2011, this Award recognizes the remarkable contributions of an Executive Director who has helped grow their affiliate and made significant contributions to the Horizons National affiliate network. Horizons National Chief Program Officer Jose Oromi presented Edwards with the award on April 17 at Horizons National’s Annual Dinner Celebration in Norwalk, Connecticut, in front of 220 guests. “Christy Edwards truly defines the definition of a community leader,” says Oromi. “She has worked diligently to grow and expand her affiliate program, while at the same time breaking ground with new partnerships that have helped transform our affiliate network.” Tom Oxnard, Horizons Savannah board president, is incredibly proud of Edwards’ efforts: “Christy has taken a fledgling program which originally started on the campus of Savannah Country Day School, expanded it to Bethesda Academy and St. Andrews School, and now oversees almost 200 kids doing intensive summer enrichment. She is amazing and we are lucky to have her!" Before the ceremony, Christy Edwards had no idea she would be receiving the Leadership Award. Surprised and touched by the honor, she says, “Our program is really a reflection of the strength and dedication of all the faculty, volunteers, students, families and community members that are involved. I am thrilled that our work has been recognized on a National level and hope this award will bring more attention to the value of summer learning and youth development programs in our community.” ### About Horizons Savannah ecognized as one of America’s best summer learning programs, Horizons Savannah at Savannah Country Day School, Bethesda Academy and St. Andrew’s School welcomes over 150 low-income students each summer to a six-week summer enrichment program that helps prevent “summer slide”: the loss-of-learning that occurs during the summer. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, recreational and cultural activities, nutritious meals and snacks, caring professional teachers and creative, challenging instruction, we unlock a student’s potential to achieve. During the program, students gain an average of two months’ growth in reading and three months’ growth in math.
