By: Winged Lion Publications The inspiration for Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s most famous work, “Frankenstein: In 1814, two years before the notorious “Gothic Summer” in Geneva, 16 year old Mary Godwin eloped to Paris with the 22 year old married poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, inviting Mary’s 15 year old step-sister Claire Clairmont to go with them. They would walk across war ravaged France to Switzerland and return up the Rhine River. Three years later Mary would publish a journal she kept of that journey of two teenage girls and the poet of “free love” on a tour of self-discovery. In the published version of “A History of a Six Week’s Tour” she would tell where they went and what they saw, but she never revealed the true secrets of that trip, from where a later inspiration arose. Here now, for the first time is revealed the secret portions of that tour and beyond. In 1848, before her death, released from a promise, Mary Shelley would write a more fully detailed version of these events in intimate personal revelation in the form of a memoir, revealing previously unknown details of her life and relationships. She did not publish these diaries, but left the decision whether to publish to her children. They did not publish the recovered manuscripts, but returned them to a friend, discovered in Switzerland. Additional portions of the diaries relating to the Shelleys and other romantic poets and authors, and the events of their rich and ultimately tragic lives are still yet to be revealed, but the story of “The Frankenstein Diaries: The Romantics” by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Michael January is set for release this summer.
