Weather Permitting - 12 Monks and 16 Islanders. A photographic journey

CARMARTHENSHIRE, Wales - May 17, 2015 - PRLog -- Caldey is a tiny island off the coast of Wales where time seems to stand still. What once was a bustling island full of children, a school and a village hall, nowadays forms the base of a secluded existence. No supermarket. No streetlights. Only a solid core of 28 inhabitants, including 12 monks who blend into the rough nature. The islanders are dependent on the tide, the light and each other.

‘This whole weather permitting-thing is driving me mad. You can’t guarantee anything.’

Without telephone and internet access she travelled to Caldey Island, a small island off the coast of Wales. A journey in which she left behind the control freak and telephone addict and in which she looked for solitude.

Ilse Wolf:

The 23-year-old documentary photographer Ilse Wolf studied photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp. Then she continued her studies at AKV St. Joost in Breda, the Netherlands, where she got her bachelor degree in photography.  ‘Weather Permitting’ is her graduation project.  Like her other projects it started as a personal quest. What is loneliness? Does that even exist? She wondered what it would be like to escape from the fast consumer’ssociety. To be really alone. To just see what the day will bring you. To be dependent on nature.
