LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - May 26, 2015 - PRLog -- Adversity is no stranger to author, runner and breast cancer survivor, Robyn Schneider. Her husband Allan was diagnosed with MS shortly after they were married. Her identical twin sons, Alex and Jamie now twenty-four, were diagnosed with severe autism just shy of their second birthday. When they turned five, Robyn accepted they were not going to be like other kids; they were severely autistic, non-verbal with extremely challenging behaviors. It wasn’t until ten years ago, when Alex and Jamie embraced running, that Robyn felt warmth and optimism in a place that was once cold and dark.

But the joy was short lived – Robyn was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer six years ago. It was in the middle of treatment when Robyn found inspiration in Alex and Jamie's running and laced up her own running shoes. She joined her sons and husband on the trails as a therapy to heal herself, both emotionally and physically. She eventually beat her breast cancer and attributes part of her success to running. Running has since become a way of life for the Schneiders and a way to communicate with her non-verbal sons. “There are unspoken words exchanged when we’re running; long conversations between parents and sons that only we can hear. The smiles and tight hugs at the end of a run tells each of us everything we need to know.

Robyn will be running along with her twin autistic sons, Alex and Jamie, in the The Hope Runs Here 13.1 mile Half-Marathon. Proceeds from the race will go to LI2DAY that funds programs that include counseling services specifically designed for children and teens affected by their parent/guardian’s breast cancer, as well as Hospice programs that provide comfort and dignity to the patients and their families at the end-stage-of-life. The race will be held on Sunday, June 14, 8am at SmithPointCountyPark in Shirley, NY. Robyn hopes that her achievements will provide the inspiration for others to overcome their challenges – and to prove to them that their triumphs can be far greater than their disabilities!
