The program will include a panel discussion on the history of Black actors performing Shakespeare from Ira Aldridge as Othello in the 1800s to Orson Welles’ famed Harlem production of Macbeth to the Public Theatre’s multicultural Shakespeare in the Park to the Harlem Shakespeare Company. Panelists include: classically trained actors Debra Ann Byrd, Dathan B. Williams, Mary Hodges and Julius Hollingsworth. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s all Black production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar had successfully the toured England before it was filmed and broadcast on BBC Television in 2012. Julius Caesar is directed by Gregory Doran, chief associate director of Royal Shakespeare Company. The cast is headed by Jeffery Kissoon as Julius Caesar, Paterson Joseph as Brutus and Cyril Nri as Cassius; with Ray Fearon as Mark Antony and Adjoa Andoh as Portia. The cast also includes: Segun Akingbola (Trebonius), Mark Ebulue (Artemidorus) “One of the inspirations behind setting Julius Caesar in Africa was discovering the Robben Island connection to Shakespeare and that Nelson Mandela had chosen to autograph lines from the play, asserting that it spoke in a particular way to his continent,” said Gregory. “ It also struck me that there must be some reason why Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, had translated the play into Swahili. The play chronicles their experiences with the Marine Corp., the South, and World War II. It’s directed by Eric Coleman and written by Dr. John Mitchell July 28, 29 Mr. Joy is a 90-minute fast-paced, one-man show written and performed by Obie Award winner Daniel Beaty. It’s a multi-character storytelling about Mr. Joy, a Chinese-American, who has run a shoe-repair shop in Harlem for decades. An unexpected occurrence causes several of his customers to recollect the impact that he had on their lives. A heart-warming and hilarious exploration through one community’s journey to find boundless joy and learn to dream again. The Bold New Voices series kicked off June 2, 2015, with a multicultural all female production of Julius Caesar directed by Petronia Paley and starring Debra Ann Byrd, Trezana Beverley, Michelle Shay and 16 classically trained actresses, which was co-produced by the Harlem Shakespeare Festival. Bold New Voices: Past, Present and Future is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, New York City Council Member Inez E.
